Cavapoos are known for their beauty, temperament, and hypoallergenic coats. But did you know only certain generations of Cavapoos are actually hypoallergenic?
There are several generations of Cavapoos, F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, F2b, etc. So what do these mean? What’s an F1b Cavapoo? And why is it the most favored generation?
In short, an f1b Cavapoo is also known as a first-generation backcross. This occurs when a Cavapoo is bred back with a Poodle. Thus, resulting in a Cavapoo with 75% Poodle and 25% Cavalier. In addition, you can also have an f1b reverse Cavapoo which is a Cavapoo bred backcrossed with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
So what’s special about the F1b Cavapoo versus the other generations?
In this blog post, we will cover the F1b Cavapoo generation in detail and compare it to some of the other generations. We will also discuss the F1b Cavapoos’ physical appearance, size, colors, temperament and answer other frequently asked questions.
Let’s dive in.

The Cavapoo Generations
The Cavapoo is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle. However, Cavapoos can be bred in several different ways, which is why there are generations of Cavapoo.
It’s the same reason that not all Cavapoos are created equal. Some may have more Poodle in their genes, and others may have more Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
What Foes The “F” Mean In The Cavapoo Generations?
You’ve probably seen a few generation names such as F1, F1bb, or F2b Cavapoo, but what does the ‘F’ mean?
The ‘F’ in the Cavapoo generations stands for ‘filial.’ The word filial means “generation after the parental generation.” So an F generation Cavapoo is just a generation of offspring from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle.
Any number following the F, such as 1 or 2, refers to the generation number. So F1 would mean generation one and F2 generation two.
The letter ‘B’ in generation names refers to a backcross. So, for example, an F1b Cavapoo is the first-generation backcross. Likewise, an F1bb would be considered a first-generation backcross backcross.
Genetics Of Cavapoo Generations
Here is a basic breakdown of the genetics you can expect to find in each generation.
- F1 Cavapoo: 50% Poodle & 50% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- F1b Cavapoo: 75% Poodle & 25% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- F1b Reverse Cavapoo: 75% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel & 25% Poodle
- F1bb Cavapoo: 87.5% Poodle & 12.5% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- F2 Cavapoo: 50% Poodle & 50% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- F2b Cavapoo: 62.5% Poodle & 37.5% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- F2bb Cavapoo: 81.25% Poodle & 18.75% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
What Is An F1b Cavapoo?
An F1b Cavapoo is the first-generation backcross. This occurs when a Cavapoo is bred back with a Poodle. Thus, resulting in a Cavapoo with 75% Poodle and 25% Cavalier.
The F1b backcross generations exist to reduce negative traits that may be present in the F1 generation Cavapoos. F1b generations are also much easier to predict regarding their physical appearance and temperament.
F1bb Cavapoos
The F1bb Cavapoos are a double backcross. In other words, an F1b Cavapoo is bred with a Poodle. This leaves the breed with 87.5% Poodle genes and 12.5% Cavalier genes on average (though Poodles tend to be used more often).
The F1bb-Cavapoos were designed to reduce undesirable characteristics of F1b-generation Cavapoos. However, most of the time, F1bb types look identical to Poodles. This might detract from the distinctiveness of the Cavapoos.
What’s An F1b Reverse Cavapoo?
An F1b reverse Cavapoo is similar to the F1b. However, the Cavapoo is bred with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel instead of a Poodle. The result is an F1b Cavapoo that’s 75% Cavalier and 25% Poodle. As a result, reverse-Cavapoos are much less common than other types of Cavapoos.
What Does An F1b Cavapoo Look Like?
Since the F1b Cavapoo is 75% Poodle and 25% Cavalier, its appearance and build will be very similar to a Poodle.
Their eyes are typically dark brown and round, and their ears are floppy. Their muzzle is more pointed than the Cavalier’s but not as extreme as a Poodle’s.
A Cavapoo with a round face, floppy ears, and a non-shedding coat is the most sought after. An F1b generation Cavapoo usually has a curly coat like the Poodle but could have moderately wavy hair too. Their coats are generally medium length and soft to the touch.

Other Cavapoo Generations Compared To The F1b
F1 Cavapoo
The f1 generation Cavapoo, or the first cross-generation, is a dog that inherits half Poodle and half Cavalier King Charles Spaniel genes.
When genes are split fifty-fifty, they can manifest various characteristics from both parents. It’s the same reason siblings may appear so different even though they have the same mother and father.
The physical appearance of an F1 Cavapoos is impossible to predict because they could take more after either the poodle parent or the Cavalier parent.

F2 Cavapoo
An F2 generation Cavapoo is a second generation cross. This is a cross between two F1 Cavapoos. This means an F2 Cavapoo will be composed of 50% Cavalier and 50% Poodle.
This results in a Cavapoo with the same genetic makeup as an F1-Cavapoo. However, the F2-Cavapoos are even more unpredictable than the F1 Cavapoos. You are basically rolling the dice when getting an F2-Cavapoo.
F2b Cavapoo
An F2b Cavapoo is a second-generation backcross. They are bred from an F1 Cavapoo mating with an F1b Cavapoo. In other words, an F2b Cavapoo is 37.5% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 62.5% Poodle.
F3 Cavapoo
The last Cavapoo generation I will mention is the F3.
An F3-generation Cavapoo is the first of many multi-generation Cavapoos. Multi-gene Cavapoos can also be called F4, F2bb, and many others. The F3 Cavapoo happens in a few different ways. For example, you can breed two F2 Cavapoos or two F1B Cavapoo.
This results in offspring being easier to predict when this far into generations. The Percentage of genes from each parent will differ depending on how the generation was formed.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the F1b Cavapoo is a great family companion. They are easy to train, intelligent, and have a gentle temperament. Cavapoos are low-maintenance dogs, but they do require a lot of exercise.
Suppose you’re looking for a small to medium-sized dog breed that doesn’t shed and is hypoallergenic. In that case, the F1b Cavapoo is the best generation Cavapoo for you.
The other generation that would be the closest match to the F1b is the F1bb, F2b, and F2bb. This is because they all get most of their genes from the Poodle parent. So they will all have similar temperaments and looks.
As for the other Generations, they will have more variability in looks and temperament since they get an equal mix of genes from both parents.
So if you don’t care for the high energy or hypoallergenic coat, you may want to look into the other generations (F1, F1b reverse, F2, or F3).
Otherwise, all Cavapoo generations make great family pets. So it really just boils down to preference.
