We will also answer some of the most frequently asked questions about them. So if you are thinking about adding a cream Frenchie to your family, be sure to read on to discover all you need to know.

Let’s jump right in.

Cream French Bulldog

What Is a Cream French Bulldog?

Cream French Bulldogs are simply French Bulldogs with a cream-colored coat. They are not their own separate breed but rather a color variation of the French Bulldog.

Many people describe them as having an eggshell coloring. They are lighter than fawn Frenchies but have more coloration to them than white French Bulldogs.

Cream French Bulldogs inherit their coat color from a recessive gene. This means that both parents must carry the cream gene in order for their puppies to be born cream-colored.

There are a few different coat color variations of the French Bulldog, but cream is one of the rarest.

What DNA Makes a Cream French Bulldog?

The color of a dog’s coat is determined by the pigment found in the hair shafts. Black and brown coats are produced by eumelanin, while cream and red coats are produced by phaeomelanin.

A cream-colored coat occurs when there is an equal mix of both types of pigment. While all dogs have some amount of both eumelanin and phaeomelanin in their coat, the ratio of the two can vary widely.

For example, a black Labrador Retriever will have more eumelanin than a Golden Retriever, resulting in a darker coat. Similarly, a red setter will have more phaeomelanin than a black and tan Dachshund, resulting in a lighter coat.

As such, cream-colored coats are not always consistent in terms of shade.

Regarding the genetic makeup behind their coat, it takes two recessive dilute genes (dd) to produce a cream-colored coat.

The dilute gene needs to be attached to a red gene (e), and these dilution genes turn red pigment into a cream.

Are Cream French Bulldogs Rare?

Cream French Bulldogs are considered to be quite rare. This is due to the fact that they are produced by a recessive gene.

In order for two cream Frenchies to produce a litter of cream puppies, both parents must carry the cream gene. Unfortunately, this is not a common occurrence, which is why cream Frenchies are not seen as often as other color variations.

What Is The Difference Between a Fawn and a Cream French Bulldog?

The main difference between a fawn and a cream French Bulldog is the shade of their coat. Fawn Frenchies have a light golden coat, while cream Frenchies have a white or ivory coat.

Both colors can have a range of shades, from very light to very dark. However, cream Frenchies are typically on the lighter end of the spectrum.

Also, fawn French Bulldogs have a much more distinctly black muzzle, while cream Frenchies often have a lighter muzzle.

This is because fawn Frenchies have more eumelanin in their coat. Which gives their muzzle a darker color (eumelanin is responsible for black coloration in a dog’s coat).

Cream French Bulldog Appearance & Traits

Cream French Bulldogs have all of the same physical traits as other French Bulldog color variations.

They are small dogs with short, stocky builds and large, round heads. They have floppy ears, short muzzles, and broad chests. Their tails are either thick and short or completely absent.

Cream Frenchies typically have a light ivory coat (some refer to it as eggshell colored). However, some may be more white or cream-colored.

However, there are a few variations of cream present in the breed. Chocolate cream, blue cream, and platinum cream.

Size (Weight & Height)

Cream French Bulldogs typically weigh between 16 and 28 pounds and stand anywhere from 11 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder.

Coat Variations, Markings & Texture

The coat of a cream French Bulldog can vary in shade from very light to very dark. However, they are typically on the lighter end of the spectrum.

Cream French Bulldogs often have a lighter muzzle than other Frenchies since they have less eumelanin in their coat. Eumelanin is responsible for the black coloration in a dog’s coat.

The coat of a cream French Bulldog is short and fine. It is typically smooth and soft to the touch.

Chocolate Cream

A chocolate cream French Bulldog is very similar to a standard cream Frenchie, but with a slight brown tint to their coat.

This color is caused by a dilute liver gene (b), which gives the coat a chocolate brown hue. Chocolate cream Frenchies are rare and often mistaken for standard cream Frenchies.

Blue Cream

A blue cream French Bulldog is very similar to a standard cream Frenchie, but with a slight blue tint to their coat. This color is caused by a dilute black gene (d), which gives the coat a blue-gray hue. Blue cream Frenchies are also very rare.

Platinum Cream

Platinum cream resembles a standard cream French Bulldog the most.

The subtle difference between these two coat types is in their facial features. A platinum cream Frenchie will have a lighter nose, eyes, paw pads, and lips/mouth than a standard cream Frenchie.

Shedding & Grooming

Cream French Bulldogs are a relatively low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. They do not require much brushing, and they only need to be bathed every few months (or as needed).

These dogs are moderate shedders and will shed more during the spring and fall months. However, regular brushing will help to remove loose hair and minimize shedding.

Also, because of their light coat, any fur they do lose is much less visible than a dog with a black coat.

They do, however, require a little more attention when it comes to their wrinkles. Their wrinkles make them incredibly adorable, but they need to be cleaned. Otherwise, they’ll be prone to skin infections.

Their skin folds are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria because they stay warm and wet. So if they aren’t cleaned regularly, and their skin rubs together while being warm and damp, their skin can become irritated and eventually infected if not tended to.

Other than that, they require a similar amount of maintenance as other dogs. As mentioned, a bath every few weeks (8-12 weeks is a good schedule), their nails trimmed and ears cleaned once a month, and their teeth cleaned a few times per week.

Are Cream French Bulldogs Hypoallergenic?

Cream French Bulldogs are not considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. However, they produce less dander and tend to drool less than other dogs, which may make them a good choice for people with mild allergies.

But, they are by no means hypoallergenic.

Ears & Tail

Cream French Bulldogs have the same erect, bat-like ears as all other Frenchies. Their tails are also short and stump-like. Because of this, when they are happy or excited, they shake their entire bum instead.

Eye Color

Cream French Bulldogs typically have dark brown eyes. However, their eyes may also be hazel, green, or even blue.

Lifespan

The average lifespan of a cream French Bulldog is about 11-14 years.

They typically have a similar lifespan to other Frenchie coat types. The only other health condition they may get is alopecia. This is because of the dilution gene necessary to produce their cream-colored coat.

Alopecia isn’t life-threatening, but it can cause them to lose patches of their fur or thin out.

Common Health Issues

Unfortunately, the French Bulldog breed generally has quite a few genetic health issues. And cream French Bulldogs are no exception.

The most common health concerns for these dogs include:

  • Hip & elbow dysplasia: One of the more common health conditions French Bulldogs get is hip and/or elbow dysplasia. Hip and elbow dysplasia is a condition in which the bones do not fit together properly, causing pain and joint dysfunction. In severe cases, it can lead to arthritis and even lameness. Exercise and weight management are important to reduce joint stress and decrease the chances of developing this problem.
  • Patellar luxation: Patellar luxation is a condition in which the kneecap (patella) slips out of place. It can be painful and cause lameness. French Bulldogs are especially prone to this condition because of their short legs.
  • Allergies: French Bulldogs are also prone to allergies, both food and environmental. The best ways to manage them are with medication, special diets, or avoiding the allergens that trigger them.
  • Eye problems: French Bulldogs are also susceptible to a variety of eye problems, such as cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. These conditions can be painful and may cause vision problems. Regular eye exams by a veterinarian are important in order to catch these problems early.
  • Skin problems: Skin problems, such as allergies, hot spots, and yeast infections, are also quite common in these dogs. These can be uncomfortable and may require medication or special shampoos to treat.
  • Ear infections: Ear infections are also common in French Bulldogs because of their long, floppy ears. Cleaning their ears regularly and using earplugs when bathing can help to prevent them.
  • Brachycephalic syndrome: French Bulldogs often have trouble breathing because of their short skulls and flat faces. This is called a brachycephalic syndrome, which can be dangerous, especially so in hot weather or during strenuous exercise.

While these health problems are common in the breed, it doesn’t mean every cream French Bulldog will have them. And with good care and nutrition, these health problems can be lessened or even prevented.

Trainability & Intelligence

Cream French Bulldogs are just as trainable and intelligent as any other Frenchie. They are relatively quick learners and enjoy pleasing their owners. However, they can also be stubborn at times.

Patience and positive reinforcement are the best ways to train these dogs. Treats, praise, and attention are all great motivators for them.

Like all dogs, they will also need socialization. Socialization is important in order to help them become well-rounded, confident dogs. It exposes them to new people, places, and experiences and helps them learn how to cope with them.

If they are too isolated, they can easily become anxious in unfamiliar places. Which can make them overprotective, clingy, and generally unfriendly when around new dogs or people.

With all this in mind, a cream French Bulldog can be trained to be a wonderful, well-behaved companion.

Activity Level & Exercise Needs

Cream French Bulldogs are relatively inactive and will do fine with just a few short walks a day. They don’t need a lot of exercise, but they do need some in order to stay healthy and happy.

A good way to get them the exercise they need is to take them for a couple of short 15-minute walks and a play session in the yard for several minutes each day. Taking them to a nearby park or dog-friendly area is also a great option if you live in an apartment.

These dogs do not tolerate heat well, so keeping them cool in hot weather is important. Avoid exercising them in the heat of the day, and ensure they have plenty of water to drink.

They don’t need a ton of mental stimulation, but they do like to play. Playing fetch, tug-of-war, or other interactive games is a great way to keep their minds active and help them bond with you.

They’d also enjoy a good selection of puzzle toys that have food waiting to be found inside.

Cream French Bulldog Temperament & Behavior

Cream French Bulldogs are generally calm, loving, and good-natured dogs. They make great companions and do well with other pets and children.

They are quite affectionate dogs and love to cuddle and be close to their owners.

While interacting with other dogs and strangers, they are generally quite friendly. How good they are depends on how much they socialized when young.

If they are properly socialized, they will be confident and outgoing around new people and dogs. However, they can be fearful and anxious if they are not socialized well.

Cream French Bulldogs can make great watchdogs as they will bark to alert you when someone is coming. But, they are not aggressive dogs and should never be used as guard dogs.

With the right training and socialization, a cream French Bulldog can be a great addition to any family.

Food & Diet

Cream French Bulldogs have a few dietary requirements that are important to consider.

First, they typically love their food, which causes them to virtually inhale it. This then leads to them being overly gassy because they swallow a lot of air while quickly gulping down their meal.

A slow feeder bowl is the best way to combat this.

Second, cream French Bulldogs are prone to weight gain. So, it’s important to feed them a high-quality diet that is appropriate for their age, activity level, and weight.

And third, because of their short faces, they can also be prone to dental problems. So, it’s important to include dental care in their daily routine and give them chew toys to help keep their teeth clean.

Cream French bulldogs have small stomachs and require a high-quality diet designed specifically for small dogs.

Vets recommend a diet high in protein and healthy fats for these dogs.

Cream French Bulldog Price

Cream French Bulldogs are not cheap dogs. They typically cost between $2000 and $3500.

The price will depend on factors such as the breeder, their location, the dog’s lineage, and whether they are show quality or pet quality.

However, don’t be surprised if you see one going for $5,000 or more. French Bulldogs generally are more expensive dogs because of the increased difficulty in breeding them.

Pair that with many people wanting them and the rare coat colors they come in, and you can better understand why they are priced higher than other breeds.

It’s important to do your research and find a reputable breeder who has healthy, happy dogs. Ask to see the parents and meet the puppy’s littermates if possible.

Always make sure you are dealing with a reputable breeder.
