One person’s experience with their french bulldog isn’t enough to say whether french bulldogs shed or not.
Or to what extent they shed.
Which is why I did a personal survey using various french bulldog communities online to find what real owners had to say about their pups shedding.
I also found IHeartDogs did a poll asking french bulldog owners what their experience with shedding was.
In total, using both surveys I gathered 63 french bulldog owners responses to the question of whether or not their french bulldog shed.
And if they did shed, how much.
They had the option to pick:
- Extreme Shedding
- Moderate Shedding
- Low Shedding
- No Shedding
18% of frenchie owners said their pup shed excessively.
44% of frenchie owners said their pup moderately shed.
33% of frenchie owners said their pup hardly shed.
5% of frenchie owners said their pup never shed.
Which means the most accurate answer to whether french bulldogs shed is:
Yes, french bulldogs shed but the majority of them only shed a little or a moderate amount.
More than 75% of owners shared that their french bulldog didn’t have out of control shedding, but it was certainly noticeable that they were shedding.
6 Factors That Increase French Bulldog Shedding
1) Age
As a french bulldog ages, they’ll most likely shed more.
This is because their coat changes as they grow older.
Puppies usually have a softer, fluffier coat that sheds less.
But as they get older, their adult coat starts to come in and this is when shedding usually increases.
There were a lot of people on reddit that commented about how their frenchie started really shedding a lot in their later months.
Many people responded saying they experienced the same thing and that it was likely just their adult coat coming in.
So when a frenchie moves from puppyhood to their teenage years, shedding noticeably picks up.
2) Climate
French bulldogs that live in warmer climates will often shed more than ones who live in colder climates.
This is because their bodies are trying to regulate their temperature and shedding helps them do that.
If you live in a place with extreme temperatures (either hot or cold), then your dog is likely to shed more.
So if you live in a warm climate and your frenchie is shedding a lot, it’s most likely due to the weather and not anything else.
There were a few people who commented about how their dog only started shedding excessively when they moved to a warmer climate.
So if you’ve recently moved or are thinking about moving, keep this in mind.
It’s also worth noting that some seasons will be worse for shedding than others.
3) Diet
Just like with people, what a french bulldog eats can affect how much they shed.
If your dog isn’t getting the proper nutrients, it can show in their coat.
This is why it’s important to feed your frenchie a high-quality diet that has all the nutrients they need.
There are specially-formulated french bulldog foods that can help with shedding, but any good dog food will do.
Just make sure to avoid any fillers or artificial ingredients.
4) Not Enough Brushing
If you don’t brush a french bulldog regularly, you’ll really notice their shedding.
Without a good brushing routine their loose fur will get all over your clothes, furniture and hands when you pet them.
Not only will you notice their shedding more but their skin and coat might even become less healthy and in turn increase their shedding further.
While brushing is great for collecting loose/dead fur, it’s also great at collecting dirt & debris caught in their coat and spreading their natural skin oils.

5) Infrequent Bathing (Or Too Often!)
If you don’t bathe your frenchie very often their skin and coat can become damaged which will increase their shedding.
However, on the flip side, if you bathe them too often you’ll strip their coat of its important natural oils which will dry out their skin.
Causing them to also shed more.
So it’s important to find a balance when it comes to bathing your french bulldog.
Most people bathe their frenchie every few weeks or once a month.
And if you do it any less than that, you might start to notice an increase in shedding.
But if you bathe them more often than that, their coat will likely become dry and damaged.
As with most things in life, moderation is key.
6) Higher Than Usual Anxiety
Stress & anxiety can lead to excessive shedding in french bulldogs (and people!).
If your frenchie is going through a particularly stressful time, you might notice their shedding increase.
There are a few things that can cause stress & anxiety in dogs such as:
– Moving to a new home
– Bringing home a newborn baby
– Adding another pet in the home
– Going to the vet/groomer

You can try:
– Giving them more structure/routine in their new environment
– Giving them lots of love & attention
– Training/playing with them more often
– Doing more things they normally love doing (car rides, trips to the dog park, etc.)

5 Tips & Solutions To Help French Bulldogs Shed Less (From Owners)
1) Brush Often
One of the best ways to reduce shedding is to brush your french bulldog regularly.
This will help collect all the loose/dead fur before it has a chance to fall on your clothes or furniture.
It’s also great for their skin & coat as it helps distribute their natural oils.
You should brush your frenchie at least once a week, but more often is even better.
Owners on reddit shared that brushing everyday or every other day really helped reduce their frenchies shedding.
And there are all sorts of brushes you can use depending on your dog’s coat type.
But a good slicker brush or bristle brush will work well for most frenchies.
2) High Quality Diet
What your french bulldog eats can have a big impact on how much they shed.
If they’re not getting the right nutrients, their skin & coat can become unhealthy which will cause them to shed more.
That’s why it’s important to feed them a high quality diet that’s rich in omega-fatty acids.
These are essential for keeping their skin & coat healthy and can help reduce shedding.
Owners on reddit shared that switching to a high quality diet really helped reduce their frenchies shedding.
And there are all sorts of dog foods out there to choose from.
But you want to make sure you’re getting one that has a main ingredient being an animal based protein, is high in omega-fatty acids and other important nutrients and has no preservatives.
A good place to start is by looking at the ingredients list on the food you’re considering.
If it has a lot of fillers or low quality ingredients, it’s probably not the best choice for your pup.
The general rule of thumb when it comes to dog food is to buy as high quality as you can afford without negatively affecting you financially.
3) Fish Oil Supplement
If you’re looking for a way to reduce shedding and improve your french bulldogs skin & coat, fish oil is a great option.
It’s rich in omega-fatty acids which are essential for keeping their skin & coat healthy.
